All life is precious and interdependent. In the words of Chief Seattle of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes, “All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth.” Whether life ends prematurely due to a novel virus of dubious origin, improper police actions, or species extinction due to environmental pollution and loss of habitat, we all need minimally to take notice if not justifiably be alarmed. The future of life on earth and the quality of that life is at stake!
It is time to recognize that the our pre-COVID19 lives were not sustainable; our consumption, waste, pollution, corporate greed, depletion, and societal inequities have us on a fast track toward extinction as the earth warms and becomes more inhospitable to an increasing number of species. As we do in each new moment, we NOW have the opportunity to change the way we live, change our priorities, uplift others and create a brighter future for generations to come.
Change can be created by harnessing our collective economic power, spending on goods and services that have low environmental impact and boycotting those that don’t. For example: choose renewable energy sources over fossil fuels; minimize the use and purchase of plastics and plastic packaging; support local, regenerative and organic farms, minimizing intake of chemically grown and processed foods. Additional beneficial actions include being conscious of the waste you generate, recycling and composting, avoiding unnecessary carbon producing travel, walking or biking when able, and taking responsibility for your own health rather than relying on a medical system focused on symptomatic care.
Do not abdicate responsibility for your health to an over worked physician who may only have 15 minutes allotted to see you. Adopt a healthy lifestyle: eat well, exercise, prioritize sleep, develop positive stress coping mechanisms, avoid toxins, and practice gentle detoxification. Rather than waiting until you become ill, work with a healthcare practitioner specializing in well care, prevention, and optimizing health potential to insure that you stay well and productive throughout your life.
We are enduring a difficult moment in human history and it is time to re-examine and re-evaluate ourselves, our beliefs, the way we live, our society, our values, and our treatment of and care and concern for other human beings and other living species on planet Earth. The time is now, the power is ours, and the opportunity is to create and live into a future of a cleaner, more equitable world; with happy, healthy, productive people. Taking appropriate actions now will help to insure that we as well as more diverse species survive and thrive into the future.
